Gender Roles Should Not Define Us

Gender Roles should not define us. My name is Riya and I’ve decided to specifically address this one topic because personally, I feel like gender roles and gender inequalities such as stereotypes is a major issue that affects everyone all around the world. Females and males should be equal. Our gender should not define us and who we are. Some say boys shouldn’t cry or get upset but girls can and this shouldn’t be the case. There’s nothing wrong with crying. Nothing wrong with having emotions because it doesn’t show your weak. Don’t forget that! Many boys like to groom themselves so they feel comfortable in their own skin. For example some men like to do their eyebrows and wear makeup so they shouldn’t be treated like they are feminine. Firstly, I'd like to talk on behalf of all the girls and women out there who are constantly being told that they can’t achieve their goals because we are supposedly not ‘strong enough’ or not capable of doing what boys and men can achieve. The word Female doesn’t mean you can't play sports or not play video games. Girls are expected to sit straight, have a good posture and smile even though you're upset. Regardless of our gender we should not be expected to look or act a certain way. Not only I but how many of you were raised believing that you’re weird for not liking the colour pink but blue instead, just because the colour is stereotyped as a colour for girls. Globally women do 66% of the world’s work even though they receive 10% of the world’s income. Our society does not support a woman's intelligence and abilities enough. One’s gender shouldn't define who we are just because it's a stereotype and because society says. On the other hand people who are transgender are not treated fairly these days. They aren’t able to express themselves and be who they want without being judged or discriminated. This isn’t fair. They are humans just like us. Our gender is only part of who we are , it does not define us as people. Is this what our society has become? Judging people. Not allowing them to be themselves Boys how would you like it if people compared you to a female only because you cried? Girls if you were told you act like a boy just because you played football how would you feel? Men are supposedly higher than women on the hierarchy but in my opinion we are all equal. We need to let others express themselves. We can be a better community.
