Countdown To LFW: Fanni Varga
"Fascinated by the combination of different textures, layering and identity a ByVarga muse is a witty, spirited woman whose distinctive style is an expression of their individuality."
In the run up to London Fashion Week, we wanted to interview some of the UK’s finest up and coming designers!
Fanni Varga completed her fashion design course at the London College of Fashion and her graduate collection was featured in Vogue UK, Dazed and Confused and her designs were also selected for the Italian Vogue Talent edition in 2015. In 2016 she established ByVarga, a London based womenswear label. Her designs are characterized by a delicate femininity that is elegant but cool and contemporary.
How would you describe your design aesthetic in 3 words?
Feminine, Edgy, Cool
What is your creative process when designing?
Before I start designing I do an extensive research on the topic then I start to create my own story for it. My stories always have to have a different muse. I never draw pretty faces, my characters are always a bit alienated and interestingly strange looking. I do some rough sketches of the idea then I start working on the stand. I do work a lot on the stand then go back to my drawings and remake them I keep repeating this process until I like the result.
What does it mean to you to be showing your designs at LFW?
It is an amazing opportunity for having selected to present my collection at LFW I am very thankful for The Prince’s Trust and Fashion Finest for making this happen and supporting new business also giving them to opportunity to reach out for more people and show their talent.
How do you avoid getting stuck creatively?
I absolutely love creating I always loved, so for me it is also a hobby and not just work. If I really don’t feel creative I just do something else as sometimes your are just not in a creative mindset. I do administrative things for my business then go back to creative work the next day.
How do you handle stress and what skills do you think are necessary to be a designer?
I think to be a good designer/entrepreneur you need to be persistent and believe in what you are doing. I think the people who succeed are the ones who do not give up. Having your own business can be very stressful sometimes but stressing won’t solve any problem so I always try to stay positive and focus on a solution instead of worrying too much.
Who would be your dream client?
I don’t have a dream client as anyone who buys your design appreciates and likes your work and it does not matter who that person is.
