10 Books You Should Read This Summer

One of the best things about summer is being able to lounge about and do nothing in great weather especially when you’ve just finished school, completing your degree or just taking some time off work. If you find yourself bored whilst lounging, need something to do while you melt on the train or just want some new material to read, check out this list of books to read this summer:

  1. Rich People Problems - Kevin Kwan

  2. Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud: The Rise and Reign of the Unruly Woman by Anne Helen Petersen

  3. So Much Blue – Percival Everett

  4. We Crossed A Bridge & It Trembled – Wendy Pearlman

  5. New People – Danzy Senna

  6. Goodbye Vitamin – Rachel Khong

  7. Perennials – Mandy Berman

  8. Chemistry – Weike Wang

The genre of these books are all over the place this time, I really wanted to try and read books that I wouldn’t pick normally or that I’ve never heard of. I was really interested in reading Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud, it’s an analytical book all about how celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj are pushing the boundaries on what it means to be an ‘acceptable’ woman. After watching (and loving) several episodes of Love Island, seeing stupid Piers Morgan tweets and seeing general rubbish from men online, I thought I need to give this book a read!

Reading is such a great way of reliving stress and taking time out to do something that doesn’t take up much energy and is quite relaxing. With all the tragedies and suffering that has been going on recently, it’s just as important to take some time out for yourself and your mental health as it is to keep up with current events and fighting for injustice. Whether that be through reading, taking a break from social media or even something small like doing your nails or re-arranging your desk or room, self-care is extremely important!
