Workout Tips For Beginners

Joining a gym can be a scary experience, especially if you're going to be working out on your own and you're not really sure of what to do. However, you shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes, the gym can be a bit of trial and error in the beginning but there are a few ways to make it easier and more beneficial to you a lot quicker. Here are 5 tips that should make working out and reaching your goal a lot easier:

1) Don't be afraid to lift heavy

This point is specifically towards any women reading this. Obviously I don't mean walk into the gym tomorrow and try to pick up 100kg, I mean women shouldn't be afraid to add some weight training to their workout, it will not make you bulky or make you 'look like a man'. Weight training is a great way to build muscle and grow stronger!

2) Don't pay attention to anyone at the gym

Gym intimidation is real. However you need to keep reminding yourself that everyone is there to work on themselves and keeping all your attention on someone else isn't going to help you reach your goals. Most of the time, you'll realise that the intimidation is all in your head, everyone really is just focussing on whatever exercise or machine their using.

3) Have a clear goal

Setting yourself a goal is so important when creating a workout routine, because if your routine isn't changing you in the way you want it to, then there's no point. For example, if your goal is to lose weight or fat, you might want to make sure your routine is mostly cardio or if your goal is to build muscle, you might want to make weight training the majority of your plan. Make sure that you know what you want to achieve at the gym so you can tailor a plan around this.

4) Think about getting a trainer

If you're someone who lacks motivation or you need someone to push you, it would be a good idea to get a personal trainer. Their role is to help you achieve whatever goals you've set yourself and to push you even when you might want to give up. Also a trainer can help you gain an in-depth understanding of different aspects of working out so they can teach you how to use machines and how to properly do exercises so you don't injure yourself.

5) Organise absolutely everything

Getting yourself a 'gym diary' or even just writing down things in your notes on your phone can make all the difference in your fitness journey. Writing down the days you want to go to the gym, what exercises you want to do and the weights you've used is a great way of holding yourself accountable (for those lazy days) and tracking your progress.

There is no rush to know everything there is about the gym or fitness and that you're going to make mistakes. Try not to push yourself too hard too fast so you can avoid injuries and remember that going to the gym should be an enjoyable way to get fit and shouldn't be a chore.
