R8 - ANTI Review

Anti is the eighth studio album by Rihanna, first released on January 28, 2016 through Westbury Road Entertainment and Roc Nation Records. On October 7, 2015, Rihanna held a private viewing for fans and press at Los Angeles' MAMA Gallery, where the guests were to wear red blindfolds to feel the Braille versions of the album's liner notes. The album cover art was designed by Israeli artist Roy Nachum. The album's front cover shows an image of Rihanna, which was taken on her first day of day care. Nachum stated that he painted a young Rihanna to represent her "bringing something new" to music. The album was highly anticipated by fans and critics as it was the longest wait between albums in her music career.

The tracklist is as follows (excluding the bonus tracks):

1. Consideration

2. James Joint

3. Kiss It Better

4. Work

5. Desperado

6. Woo

7. Needed Me

8. Yeah, I Said It

9. Same 'Ol Mistakes

10. Never Ending

11. Love On The Brain

12. Higher

13. Close To You

This album certainly shows Rihanna’s chameleon-like talents as although the album is categorised as R&B, almost all of the songs draw elements from other genres, for example, Work (ft Drake) has dancehall influences and Kiss It Better with its beautiful 80s like guitar riffs. Her vocal ability, which is often criticised, has improved greatly and is especially impressive in the slower and softer songs like Love On The Brain and Higher.

Like Rihanna’s two previous albums, Anti also has a rebellious edge to it, especially with the first track Consideration with the lyrics ‘I got to do things, my own way darling, will you ever let me? Will you ever respect me? No’. Overall, Rihanna has not only created an album with catchy, club friendly songs and love songs that show that she has a vulnerable side, the music on this album definitely shows a more independent artist which reflects her edgier persona that we often see in the media.
